The land was homesteaded by his Grandmother and his father in 1907. In 1937, the National Park Department purchased their ranch on Sheep Mountain and Hap bought a ranch on the west side of Hart Table near Indian Creek. The family ranched there until 1948 when Hap sold the ranch and bought the Scenic Cafe and Pool Hall, and John worked in both businesses. John went to school in Scenic thru ninth grade at which time the high school was closed and he finished his schooling and graduated Martin E. How does anyone ever goodbye? I write. How could I not write this? Martin Edward O'Laughlin, Papa, our Marty O' was born on July 8, 1927, in Chicago, the son of 'Laughlin Mary Magdalene (Collins) and Lawrence E. O'Laughlin. He had one sister, Mary Teresa (Berlanga) O'Laughlin, who preceded him in death. Her son, Paul, in Chicago, and daughter, Teresa (Halloran) O'Laughlin, in Tennessee, survive him.

They are loved by us all, though far away. At the age of 15, following his mother's death, Marty struck out West with from his parents, he enlist- ed in the United States Navy and served his country. Ted married Evelyn Mistelski at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Hot Springs. After Ted's honorable discharge from the Navy, the couple ranched south of Hot Springs on the Cheyenne River. Ted also worked for area ranchers.

He went to work for Custer State Park as a professional hunter from 1948 until 1950. After being relieved of his duty he worked at Igloo as a security guard until 1952. He farmed for a year before moving to Lead and working for the Homestake Mine for the next 20 years. Marjean was a member from Quinn High School in 1951. During the summer months John drove a grain truck for Custom Combiners Bill Taylor and Ed Deutscher. At Quinn, John met the love of his life, Jo Ann Johnson, and they were married in 1951. John and Jo Ann were blessed with three daughters, Rebecca, Victoria, and Brenda, and one granddaughter, Christy. John went to work for the Pennington County Highway Department for three years and then drove the Standard Oil truck for Glenn Lynch out of Wall for three years.

In 1956, John went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Arizona as a depot agent and worked in several different towns. John and Jo Ann lived in Tucson, Wilcox and Dragoon while in Arizona. In 1959 John went to work for Frontier Airlines in Casper, and when Frontier began service to Rapid City, he transferred in August 1959. He worked for Frontier for years 12 of those years as a senior agent. Frontier filed for bankruptcy in August 1986 and John went to work for his drums, settling in Rapid City (a place he would come to love) when it was barely 12,000 population.

He would call this place home for the rest of his life, whether he was here or away, and always he returned to his beloved Black Hills and Rapid City. Rapid City is "home" to four generations of his family, still here. He was a member of NARFE, AARP, Homestake Veterans, lifetime member of VFW Post 5969 in Deadwood, Sturgis DAV and a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Sturgis. John liked to hunt and fish and made many trips to Canada, Pierre and all the lakes in the Black Hills.

He was also interested in aviation and held a private pilot's license. He was also a World War II history buff and had an extensive collection of World War II books, magazines, VHS tapes and CDs. John enjoyed playing cribbage and having coffee at Hardees with his buddies and monthly lunches with a couple of his old Frontier Airline friends. Also, their daughter, Donna's many, many "Mamma Mulder" children, from the area, called Marty Papa through the years. Marty's "Man Cave" is famous (or infamous if you like) in Rapid City, and his "Irish Ice Cream Socials" early each July, and costume galas in winter have been annual affairs in Rapid City and elsewhere for nearly 40 years. They often included a "real" parade, a dance with band and whatever other festivities suited Marty's fancy (as many as 600 have been known to attend.)
